H.R. 2454, The Waxman-Markey American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (ACES)

Well as hard as it is, the American Congress (house) has passed the Waxman-Markey Act which begins to set out targeted green house gas reductions for the US. This is by no means a perfect bill, but it is a start after the last 12 years of ignoring Kyoto. As we can see from the entrenched folk fighting to keep our "health care" system in place, there is a strong reactionary element that will fight any forward looking change. The health care debate is mild compared to what will be coming on HR2454. We must make a start at this, and that is what HR2454 does.

Read it, get familiar with the points and be prepared to argue for it. There are those that want to push for stronger legislation, but unfortunately we will probably get something less than HR2454 (once it goes through the Senate) or nothing. At least if we can pass this we will show a modicum of commitment to change.

Also, let's not forget the Carter/Reagan solar example. Carter had solar panels installed on the white house (i met one of the guys that installed them) and Reagan had them removed:

Whatever we do now can easily be undone later by those in power. So right now, contact your Senator and let them know that they must act. Be prepared to argue and educate, because the "health care debate" is noting compared to what will be said about HR2454.
